Evaluation of Patients
A physician can evaluate the patient's symptoms and their medical history, and
in many cases utilize assessment tools specifically designed to evaluate for mental
illness. There are currently no laboratory tests that can be used to help diagnose
bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, but physicians may utilize various tests to rule
out certain physical ailments with related symptoms. Diagnosis of bipolar depression
is often complicated by undisclosed episodes of hypomania or mania and difficulty
in obtaining an adequate family history.
Because of the complex nature of these disorders and the range of symptoms that
can be presented, accurate diagnoses can still be difficult to attain.
