What is SEROQUEL?
All medicines are divided into families or classes. SEROQUEL is a medicine within the
"antipsychotic" class, a group of medicines that has been around since the 1950s.
Within the antipsychotic class, there are newer medicines called atypical (or second
generation) antipsychotics that were introduced starting in the 1990s. SEROQUEL
is one of these atypical antipsychotic medicines, and has been FDA-approved for more
than 10 years for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults. In 2004, the FDA
approved SEROQUEL for the acute (or short-term) treatment of bipolar mania in adults
and later, in 2006, approved it for the acute treatment of bipolar depression
in adults. In 2008, SEROQUEL was approved as long-term treatment of
bipolar disorder in adults with lithium or divalproex. In 2009,
SEROQUEL was approved to treat schizophrenia in adolescents ages 13- 17 years and
approved for manic episodes in bipolar disorder in children and adolescents ages 10
to 17 years.
How SEROQUEL Works
Chemical imbalances in the brain are believed to lead to the symptoms presented
in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. At this time, experts are not clear on what
causes these chemical imbalances.
Although the exact way medicines like SEROQUEL work is unknown, they are thought
to regulate the balance of certain chemicals in the brain. While SEROQUEL treats
the symptoms of these disorders, it is important to note there is no cure for bipolar
disorder or schizophrenia.
